We have all been lied to. At some point in all of our lives we have
had doubts about whether a particular person is telling us the truth.
While there is no foolproof way to tell if someone is lying, there are a
few clues that you may want to look out for that can indicate deceit.
If you know the person well, you will want to take into account their
general attitude when using these methods, but if the person shows many
of these signs beware.
Not one of these signs alone is proof of lying, but the more the subject demonstrates, the more chance they have something to hide.
1. Eyes. If someone is avoiding your gaze while speaking to you, chances are that they are lying to you. Not maintaining eye contact reflects guilt on the part of the person telling the lie. Same goes with eyes darting around or not holding your gaze for long.
2. Hands. If someone is fidgeting with their hands, and not showing their palms this is an indicator that they may be trying to deceive you. Extension of the fingers to their full length is an indicator of honesty, while closing off the hand or hiding it altogether is an indicator of deception.
3. Arms and Legs. Crossing the legs and arms is a great way to tell if someone is lying to you. People who adopt this body posture are projecting the message “I am being defensive and keeping something in”. If someone is relaxed in their space and stretched out, then they are less likely to be lying.
4. False Animating. If movements of the arms to express passion are mechanical and stiff in appearance when the person is usually fluid, this can be a warning sign. Trying to be artificially emphatic is what a good liar will do.
5. Touching of the face. If the person touches their face, particularly around their mouth, nose, or ears they may be attempting to lie to you. Touching the face is an unconscious body signal to show discomfort at a line of questioning, or to attempt to mask their true intent. Some people do this naturally, so take this in conjunction with other signs.
6. Light Shrugging. If a person is lying to you, they are going to shrug but not often, and it will appear rigid or forced. If they shrug only partially throughout the conversation, they are trying to send the signal that they don’t know, when they really do.
7. First Emotional Response. When asking someone a question look at their face for their initial emotional response. If they smile while telling you bad news, that is a good indicator of their real emotional responses. If someone keeps their emotional response in tune with their verbal reaction they may be truthful.
8. If someone is shaking their head while being asked a question, before the question or during it, this is a good sign that they are telling the truth. If they have this response after the question is asked the may be lying. The same applies to gestures, if they are replying negatively and make hand motions AFTER making their point then there is a good chance they are lying. Also not moving the head while accentuating points is a good indicator of deceit.
9. Head and Body posture. Someone who is lying will generally try to move away from the source of accusation. This can include walking away from them, shifting their body to the side or even just moving their head away. These are all signs that the subject is uncomfortable and may be lying. Tilting of the head however is a sign of interest, and generally is not a sign that the person is lying to you.
10. Position in a room. If someone is lying to you, they generally will have their back to the wall, or be facing an exit from the room. This is an unconscious decision that our body make when it feels threatened.
11. Touch. If the subject is distant from you and unwilling to make contact this shows that they are uncomfortable and want to distance themselves from you.
12. Finger Pointing. Someone telling the truth may point a finger either at you or up in the air, this is generally not done by someone who is trying to be deceitful or lying.
13. If the person uses some sort of barrier between you and them it shows unconsciously that they want to form a barrier between themselves and the source of their discomfort. This can include something small like a cup, or maybe even a piece of paper.
14. Words. The words that the person you are questioning chooses to use can a reflection into whether they are being truthful or not. If they parrot back the words you use, you may want to take more notice of them. Using the same type of phrasing as the question may be an indicator of guilt.
15. Silent Treatment. If you give someone the silent treatment and they keep trying to engage you in conversation this may be a warning sign. The liars are uncomfortable in silence.
16. Implying an answer without giving it. Not out and out stating a definitive answer when the person normally does so can be an indicator that they are lying to you.
17. Being slow in response to an easy question. When you are telling the truth, you don’t have to think to think about it.
18. Not emphasizing a yes or no answer. Emphasis is generally put on truthful statements. Stating a weak response demonstrates a lack of conviction.
19. Asking is a two way street. If you ask someone an important question that applies to both of you, and they don’t ask you the same question this should raise an alarm.
20. Use of the phrase “why would I lie to you?”. Liars want to cover up their lies, of course they would lie. Using this phrase is about just trying to convince you
21. Remembering a far past date to the letter. Liars will have rehearsed their lies, if your question goes back further than a month and they remember every little detail, beware.
22. If the person uses humor to respond to a serious question. Generally someone being truthful would want to clear the air and not deflect with a funny or sarcastic comment.
23. Answers have strange numerical similarity. This especially applies to multiples of the same number. Such as asking someone how their night went and they reply “Well we started dinner at 8, I had 4 drinks and then we went to the club and stayed till 12”. Our minds will pick easy numbers in a sequence to seem natural.
